2023 Edstart Primary & Secondary CIS Athletics Championships

The 2023 Edstart Primary & Secondary CIS Athletics Championships will be held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre on Tuesday 19 September, 2023. 

Please read through the following information carefully in preparation for the event.

In the lead up to the 2023 Edstart CIS Athletics Championships next week, we've produced a video series in collaboration with our naming rights partner Edstart profiling some of our athletes.

Kiera Toohey started her journey with athletics as a way to gain coordination and speed for playing touch football. The PLC Sydney student tells us about how it has become a big part of her life since then, and what she loves about the tactical side of longer distance running.

Venue Entry & Parking

Venue entry for all competitors, officials and spectators for the Competition Arena will be through the Main Pedestrian Entrance accessed from Edwin Flack Avenue (Gates E and F).

Venue entry for all competitors, officials and spectators for the Warm-Up Track will be through the Main Pedestrian Entrance accessed from Shane Gould Avenue (Gate J).

Please note: There will be a Road Closure in place on Shane Gould Avenue.

Spectator parking is recommended in the P2 Car Park. Parking tickets can be validated for $18 flat rate on the day.

Venue Entry: From 7:30am

Track Events Commence: 8:00am

Field Events Commence: 8:30am

Secondary Program & Timing

The Secondary Athletics Championships will take place in both the the Competition Arena and Warm-Up Track. 

Track Events Commence: 2:20pm - Competition Arena Only.

Field Events Commence: 11:00am - Warm-Up Track, from 3:15pm - Competition Arena.

Piper Sweeny

Originally a swimmer, Piper Sweeny had to change tact when pools shut down during the pandemic. She gave running a go to keep up her fitness and in her own words 'hasn't been able to stop since'. The Year 7 student from Kambala is competing in the 1500m at the 2023 Edtsart NSWCIS Athletics Championship, and is looking for a podium finish.

The 2023 Edstart Primary & Secondary CIS Athletics Championships Track Events will be live streamed through Cluch.

If you do not give permission for you child to be live streamed, please contact CIS

This can also be indicated on the Online Nomination form which parents complete prior to the event. 

Schools/Associations must notify CIS of any students that they are aware of that are not to be live streamed. 

 

Please note:

  • You will be required to Sign Up/Sign In on the Cluch website in order to access the stream.

The full stream will be available, as well as each individual race following the event. 

Merchandise

Want to skip the queue? Pre-order your CIS Merchandise online at Valour Sport.

Order Window Extended: Order by midnight on Sunday 17 September to collect at the event from the Valour Click & Collect Pop Up, located inside the Main Pedestrian Entry to the Competition Arena. Simply select the 'Click and Collect' option at check out. 

On the Day - Merchandise

CIS Merchandise will also be available for purchase on the day of the event from Valour Stand. 

The Stand will be located inside the Main Pedestrian Entry to the Competition Arena.

Contactless payment only - no cash.

NSWCIS Primary Athletics Team

Generally, athletes gaining first, second or third places at the CIS Primary Athletics Championships will be selected in the NSWCIS Primary Athletics Team.

This team will compete at the NSWPSSA Athletics Championships to be held on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 October 2023 at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre.

CIS Primary Team Registration and Uniform

Competitors successful in gaining a position in the NSWCIS Primary Athletics Team will need to report to the Madison de Rozario Room following their event to register, pay the Team Member Levy, and purchase Mandatory Uniform Items. 

Costs associated with competing at the next level include the Team Member Levy: $40 and Mandatory Uniform Items: minimum $109.00

Please note: Valour Sport is the CIS Official Merchandise partner. CIS Team Uniform must be Valour branded. 

CIS Primary Team List

A final CIS Primary Team List will be available to view on the Athletics Sport Page of the CIS Website by Friday 22 September 2023.

Team Members who did not attend the Team Room to register, pay the Team Member Levy, and purchase Mandatory Uniform Items on the day of the Championships will be contacted directly via email following the Team List announcement. 

N.B. It is important that competitors attending the CIS Championships are registered to the CIS Athletics Portal prior to the event, to ensure they can be contacted. 

NSWCIS Secondary Athletics Merit Team

The Secondary pathway differs to the Primary pathway in Athletics. CIS do not submit a team to the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships, and students are not permitted to compete at this event in CIS Uniform. Students who wish to compete in these Championships are required to register directly to Athletics New South Wales. Registrations for this event have now closed. 

A NSWCIS Secondary Athletics Merit Team will be named following the CIS Championships. Athletes will be selected based on the top 3 places for each event. 

CIS Secondary Merit Team List

A final CIS Secondary Merit Team List will be available to view on the Athletics Sport Page of the CIS Website by Friday 22 September 2023.

Athletes who are named in the NSWCIS Secondary Athletics Merit Team will be given access to purchase Representative CIS Merchandise through the Valour online shop following the event. This information will be distributed directly via email. This is not compulsory.

Sami Bond

Having three siblings involved in athletics has given Sami Bond the competitive edge. SPrinting in the 100m, 200m and 400m events atthis year's Edstart NSWCIS Athletics Championships, the Pymble Ladies College student has her sights set on College in the USA and maybe even further.

Additional Carnival Information

First Aid: First Aid is provided by Complete Body Dynamics.

First Aid will be located in the First Aid Room underneath the Main Grandstand.

Dress: Competitors must compete in their Association Uniform.

Footwear - Primary: 

- All competitors must wear footwear. Spiked shoes are only permitted in 100m, 200m, Relays, Long Jump and High Jump events. Spikes are not permitted in 800m or 1500m events.

- Athletes wearing spiked shoes MUST use starting blocks for all track events up to and including the 200m, supplied by SOPAC only. 

- When spiked shoes are worn the maximum length for all track events and Long Jump is 7mm. For High Jump it is 9mm.

Footwear - Secondary:

- All competitors must wear footwear. Spiked shoes are permitted.

- Athletes wearing spiked shoes MUST use starting blocks for all track events up to and including the 400m, supplied by SOPAC only.  

- When spiked shoes are worn the maximum length for all track events, Long Jump and Triple Jump is 7mm. For High Jump and Javelin it is 9mm. 

Food & Drink: A canteen will be available at the Competition Arena only, whilst a food truck will be available at the Warm-Up Track. Competitors are advised to bring their own drinks, snacks and lunch with them if they wish to avoid queues.

Weather: The 2023 NSWCIS Edstart Primary & Secondary CIS Athletics Championships will go ahead regardless of the weather. In adverse conditions students should come prepared with extra clothes for after their event. Some events may be delayed or cancelled at the discretion of the CIS Athletics Committee if the nature of the event causes safety concerns due to the weather conditions. 

Personal Marquees: Unfortunately, spectators will be unable to bring and set-up their own personal gazebos at either the Competition Arena or Warm-Up Track...this is a decision enforced by the Venues to ensure the safety and welfare of all Competitors and Spectators.

Photography: Instant Photos will be in attendance throughout the 2023 NSWCIS Edstart Primary & Secondary CIS Athletics Championships, with their stand located inside the Main Pedestrian Entry to the Competition Arena.
